Occupational image of health care and nursing

From independently surveying and assessing needs for care over consulting of patients and their relatives in different nursing situations to assisting in highly modern medical care: the field of work of professional health care and nursing is highly diversified.

The interaction of high-tech medical care in different sections, determining of personal needs and efficient promotion of a patient's health requires empathy, power of observation, organising ability and creativity of the caregiver.

Hence the caregiver is an important link in a multi-professional team for patient care, consisting of doctors, physical therapists, spiritual welfare consultants, social workers inter alia.

Legal requirements

There are different laws, guidelines and recommendations:

  • Act on Nursing Care (KrPflG)
  • Training and examination regulation for health care and nursing
  • Guidelines for vocational training and qualification for nursing and pediatric care in North Rhine-Westphalia
  • Regulation on the Implementation of the  Act on Nursing Care

Entrance requirements

Intermediate school-leaving certificate (or an equivalent qualification)

Completion of other general school education of ten years

Secondary modern school qualification (or equivalent qualifications as long as a successful professional training of at least two years was completed successfully

evidence of a licence as a nurse's assistant (the name varies) resp. a successfully completed regulated education pursuant to federal law of at least one year as health care assistant or elderly care assistant.

Theory and practice

The theoretical education in health care and nursing divides into 13 modules for the initial two years.
In their third year our apprentices work according to the method of problem-oriented learning on selected cases.
